Meet Our Member / Smith Robinson Ltd
Smith Robinson Ltd is a privately owned professional insurance broking firm authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and has it’s origins in business founded by David Smith in 1980 and has grown organically, through a merger with Paul Robinson’s business in 1994 and subsequent acquisitions to become the well established professional insurance broking firm that it is today. We concentrate on representing our many commercial, industrial and professional clients principally in Yorkshire and the M62 corridor by providing exceptional personal service.
We hold the stand out accreditation of Chartered Insurance Brokers awarded to us by the Chartered Insurance Institute in June 2007. This recognises the high level of technical expertise within the firm, its financial stability and high ethical standards. We are one of the first broking firms to achieve this ‘Gold Standard’ award.
We are members of the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) and independent members of The Broker Network, the UK’s largest network of independent insurance brokers.
How did Smith Robinson LTD get the idea or concept for the business?
Paul Robinson and David Smith both started their insurance careers with a large insurer in Leeds. They each left the insurer independently to work for other brokers before joining forces in 1994 starting the current business in Morley.
What was their mission at the outset?
It was and continues to be that most important people in the business are our Clients and this is embodied in our Client Charter. We work with our Clients to ascertain their insurance needs and provide them with the most appropriate solution using financially secure insurance providers
What services do you offer?/strong>
We are able to provide all types of commercial insurance covers for clients involved in all types of trades and professions from office risks to construction including high risk activities such as demolition and asbestos removal. We will do household/private car/travel insurance for those connected tour commercial Clients.
Our sister company is Smith Robinson & Co. who offer independent financial advice on pensions (individual and Company) as well as Private Medical, Shareholder Protection and other Life Assurances.
How do you advertise your business?
Over the years we have tried all different ways of advertising but the most successful way has always proved to be recommendation by our existing clients or by personal recommendation from individuals who know us as a local insurance broker. This is where networking through Morley Chamber is invaluable !
To what do you attribute your success?
We are proud of the fact that a lot of Clients have remained loyal to us for many years and we are always conscious that our ongoing service throughout the year is of paramount importance.
What made you choose your current location?
I think that our philosophy of being a local broker for local businesses makes Morley an ideal location. Both within Morley and the surrounding area there are a variety of businesses all of whom have insurance requirements and we would be delighted to be seen as their broker of choice. The proximity to motorway network also makes it possible to have clients within a reasonable distance and still be able to provide them with the services of visiting their premises if at all possible.
What is unique about your business?
Over recent years we have seen a lot of the smaller brokers being acquired by the bigger national brokers and with that there is an inevitable move from the personal visits to clients’ premises to everything being done by correspondence often with an office nowhere near you. We continue to be an independent broker still offering high standard of services including attending any insurer visits for surveys of premises or claims meetings wherever we can. Quite often when I attend a claim investigation the claims adjuster will comment that it is not very often that a Broker attends these days.
Ever since I started working here it has always been said that we should be seen as the ‘insurance department ‘of the Clients and we continue to do so.
Whilst remaining independent we are part of a Network through which we have access to a variety of specialist markets including Lloyds of London so we are confident that we will always be able to provide the right solutions for our Clients.
How do you see your own role in the company today?
I started in the insurance industry on a graduate training scheme with Sun Alliance back in 1981. That gave me a good grounding and overview of all classes of insurance culminating with me working in the Claims Department – firstly dealing with third party motor claims and then moving to Sun Alliance in Leeds to deal with Liability and Professional Indemnity claims. I completed the insurance qualifications whilst working with them.
After taking a career break to have a family I got the opportunity to come to work at Smith Robinson Ltd. in 1997. Initially I was part time dealing with claims but over the years the hours expanded and the role changed to my current one as an Account Executive. This means that I look after a certain number of clients dealing with their renewals,,claims and any other insurance requirements they may have.
In addition I do get the opportunity to be able to pass on the wealth of technical knowledge that I have gained over the years both of insurance products/legal aspects and the knowledge I have gained by visiting such a variety of premises and learning about different trade processes etc. to newer younger members of staff
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
If it was to someone considering working in insurance then they need to be aware of all the different areas you can get involved in – The world of insurance is a lot bigger and more interesting than working in a call centre.
What are some qualities you’d like to see other business in Morley take advantage of?
Morley continues to be a thriving business community offering a wide variety of all types of trades and businesses including retail. We need to support each other and ensure it continues to thrive and grow.
