How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
It’s like this Luke, when you are forced to the bottom and have to start again, you have to fight. When you fight you have desire, have desire and you will make anything happen.
Me and my brother had a bathroom shop for 14 years, the Yorkshire Bathroom Company in Lower Wortley. The recession made us look fools and the shop went. My daughter was born within a week of its closure. I had no money.
Then I was offered a job in a bathroom shop, the right money, company car, manager’s role. Life would have been uninterrupted. My Dad was saying ‘son, you got to take this job, you have big responsibilities’ .. and me, being the dude that I am, turned it down and instead faced the wrath of both families when I decided ‘I am going to start a website design and marketing company’ even though I knew nothing about computers.
The bathroom showroom which offered me the job… closed down 2 years ago.
I do have to add and not as an afterthought, I prayed myself to sleep many nights and for many months. Them prayers are still being said 7 years later. Don’t ever lose sight of the blessings you receive. For we walk by faith, not by sight.
What was your mission at the outset?
To secure a future for my wife and child (now children), to prove that I can create something from nothing, with nothing and to outlast the bathroom shop which ran from 1996 – 2010.
What services do you offer?
Everything that falls inside the parameters of Branding and Marketing. I have a huge knowledge bank and don’t just talk the talk, I walk it, sleep it and have every one of my clients’ businesses in my head at all times. Branding boss just isn’t where everyone else is, it turns businesses into monsters and their owners into local celebrities should they so wish.
How do you advertise your business?
I advertised for the first time in 7 years this year, it made no difference, but you do feel the need to practice what you preach… the truth is that I personally don’t need to advertise, a customers’ success shouts louder than anything. I even deleted my website for 4 months to prove a point that social media can do everything with the right content.
To what do you attribute your success?
You can’t have anything without sacrifice and drive. I have had to give up a successful time in music, I gave up my sanity, family time, friends and sleep patterns fell away, I’ve forgotten what weekends are… when you start a business designing websites and you can’t design websites, when you start it with no money, it’s all about sacrifice.
What made you choose your current location?
This is a question with great timing. As some may know, myself and Dan Pearce have moved into an office together, we’ve done everything we said we would do inside of 6 months, it’s a natural thing for him to have a social media company next to him and it’s natural for me to have a man who’s become an honest friend in the same office, we’re there for each other daily. We drive each other and we have a so many plans. The brand is strong Daniel.
What is unique about your business?
Me. Take that however you want, but it’s the truth. I’m the best at what I do and Morley needs to stand up and recognise this fact. I’m the most original and authentic person you could ever wish to meet, love me or hate me I will give you every part of me .. for the right money.
How do you see your own role in the company today?
I’m months ahead of where the business is in real time, pull me out and there isn’t one person who could step in. That said I can’t make the work happen without my growing team.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
If you want to make it you have to sacrifice EVERYTHING and to quote Daniel, you have to work like a dog. I had the marketing knowledge but I couldn’t use a computer 7 years ago, I was up at 5am learning to design websites and then bed at 3am, literally having 2 hours sleep. If you put that graft in you can also learn how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Premier and a whole host of WordPress web design, email marketing, HMRC, invoicing software and loads more.
Learn how to do everything within your business so that nobody can hold you to ransom. Learn how to do your own tax, understand everything.
Work, work, work. If you love what you do its worth the effort, if you don’t… work for the council and get a good pension. Owning your own business is not an easy thing.
What are some qualities you’d like to see other business in Morley take advantage of?
I spent 18 months giving knowledge and then more knowledge to the businesses in Morley, I created an amazing concept online which even now, business owners don’t understand how genius it was. I stood up for businesses and gave them a voice by way of video online, I upset people by being outspoken for the disgruntled, people who I am now building bridges with. There are many companies doing things now because of me, so many people tried to copy me and my ways of marketing but they can’t because you don’t learn this stuff in a couple of months.
